“What if there was an app that enabled backpackers to find groups of like-minded adventurers and share moments like this?” thought student James Wormington while watching the sunset on Copacabana Beach in 2015. Three years later, the young entrepreneur has transformed his idea into reality with the new group travel app: Travamigos.
“There weren’t any group travel apps on the market, just 1-1 travel buddy apps that users were very dissatisfied with,” says James, whose free app is available from the iOS App Store. Traveller reviews of existing apps highlighted concerns about safety, technical capability and user motives.
With that in mind, James developed Travamigos, which boasts a secure group messaging system that allows backpackers to build new friendships and dream itineraries. The app also features inspirational travel articles, clear privacy options and a search algorithm that matches people looking for similar adventures.
“We want to encourage travellers to look out for one another, to travel with confidence, and to be free to enjoy the time of their lives,” says James.
The app is aimed at 18-24-year-old gap year travellers and was created with the help of Cocoon Development Limited and a loan from the Sir Thomas White Charity. Travamigos has been tested by students at Loughborough University and writers from Nottingham Trent University are producing travel content for the app’s website.
Travamigos CCO and co-founder Andy Wormington says: “We’ve even partnered with Skyscanner, who traditionally don’t work with start-ups, to develop a flight advice and discount widget for Travamigos. We are also finalising travel money benefits for our users with currency exchange platform WeSwap.”
Travamigos is available on the iOS App Store as a free download, an Android version is currently under development.
